Warburton, a small Cheshire village is steeped in history,
Its world famous church, St Werburgh’s dates back to the 12th century, though a priory existed on the site even earlier, and recent excavations show that a settlement existed here as early as 2000BC, making it one of the oldest known habitations in the United Kingdom.
The name of the village was originally Wareburghtune, or later, Werburgton, after the Saxon princess and saint, St Werburgh.
It’s a picture postcard village, and has been classified as a conservation area, restorations and new building work (rarely granted) must blend in with the existing style.
Warburton is a quiet, peaceful location, and to visit it is to step back in time, the only nods to modernity that a visitor sees are telephone wires and a modern road.
